One small step along the home renovation road...

This morning we finally made the first very tentative step towards implementing our grand plan for the house.  If I told you we hung a door, you would probably wonder what the fuss was about, but this particular door hang is a project that we started in July! Why so long?

I can't tell you exactly why it has taken so long, but there was confusion about whether we needed a fire door because of the next phase of works and there was also the added faff of the particular modification I wanted to the door (more of this in a bit) and somehow we are 4 months down the line...

Let's start the story at the beginning though. This is the hall of our house when we bought the property, with a sliding door between the hall and the kitchen. When we did the initial work on the house (or rather the builder did!) we removed the door and left it as an opening...

Here it is a year later, freshly decorated with a tenant living in it, but with no door...

The door thing didn't seem to bother any of our tenants, but since we moved in in February it has become more of an issue. Theo sleeps in a room off the hall (actually all the rooms are off the hall!) and so if we have people for dinner, or I'm watching TV in the kitchen the noise travels, so it was time to get a door.

Not just any old door though, I had a thing. I really wanted a porthole in the door! In fact I have really wanted a porthole in a door since I bought my first house in 2000, so I've been very patient. Today they fitted it and here's the result...

A proper nautical door! Don't look too closely, it still needs varnishing and painting round the frame, but finally living and sleeping areas are separated and I'm not the only one who loves that porthole!

There is also another reason this door is rather important, it will mark the division between the part of the house remaining untouched during renovations and the part that will become a building site and today we penciled in a start date. 3rd March 2014. The sixteen week countdown begins here!

  2. I love your imagination. That port hole is gorgeous. I am busy getting quotes for our bathroom - prior owners did not prime the gyprock before putting up old lady wall paper which I tried to strip. The whole thing needs a make over. So does my roof, my siding, windows.... Twenty years is a bad age for a house. I think you will love the changes you make.

  3. Blimey, that means it's 16 weeks until I'm 40 - yikes! I hear you re the door thing. We took all the doors out of our bungalow in the living spaces (before kids) and it's a bit of a nightmare now Dan is in a bed that he can get out of! Love your choice of door!
