I can't tell you exactly why it has taken so long, but there was confusion about whether we needed a fire door because of the next phase of works and there was also the added faff of the particular modification I wanted to the door (more of this in a bit) and somehow we are 4 months down the line...
Let's start the story at the beginning though. This is the hall of our house when we bought the property, with a sliding door between the hall and the kitchen. When we did the initial work on the house (or rather the builder did!) we removed the door and left it as an opening...
Here it is a year later, freshly decorated with a tenant living in it, but with no door...
The door thing didn't seem to bother any of our tenants, but since we moved in in February it has become more of an issue. Theo sleeps in a room off the hall (actually all the rooms are off the hall!) and so if we have people for dinner, or I'm watching TV in the kitchen the noise travels, so it was time to get a door.
Not just any old door though, I had a thing. I really wanted a porthole in the door! In fact I have really wanted a porthole in a door since I bought my first house in 2000, so I've been very patient. Today they fitted it and here's the result...
There is also another reason this door is rather important, it will mark the division between the part of the house remaining untouched during renovations and the part that will become a building site and today we penciled in a start date. 3rd March 2014. The sixteen week countdown begins here!
Love your door. The port hole is a lovely touch. Those 16 weeks are going to fly by!
ReplyDeleteI love your imagination. That port hole is gorgeous. I am busy getting quotes for our bathroom - prior owners did not prime the gyprock before putting up old lady wall paper which I tried to strip. The whole thing needs a make over. So does my roof, my siding, windows.... Twenty years is a bad age for a house. I think you will love the changes you make.
ReplyDeleteBlimey, that means it's 16 weeks until I'm 40 - yikes! I hear you re the door thing. We took all the doors out of our bungalow in the living spaces (before kids) and it's a bit of a nightmare now Dan is in a bed that he can get out of! Love your choice of door!
ReplyDeleteWell as unfashionable as it is, I can definitely recommend doors and it keeps the living part of the house warmer too! :-)
DeleteThe door is lovely, I've always wonted a door/porch with stained glass sigh one day when we buy that old house. Thank you for the share, tones in rather well with your Brit Thursday sewing link! Mary

ReplyDeleteThe first step to your renovations, how excititing. Good Luck, if the door is anything to go by, your house will be incredible. We are supposed to be near the end of our works but there's always something else to do...Katie
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, even after teh house is done, there will still be the garden to do!
Deletelove the door, best of luck with the reno's we are still going through it! Had to stop 3 times so it's been going on and on!
ReplyDeleteYou have been patient & that's a lovely door. Good luck with the rest of the work & can't wait to see more of what you do x
ReplyDeleteGreat door.... reminds me of a posh restaurant where they avoid accidents going into the kitchen with arms full of plates.... I love personal touches like these around a home...
ReplyDeleteI think Jim likes to think he is at the helm of a posh restaurant sometimes! ;-)
