90% humidity

July 25

August has arrived and we are struggling.

On Sunday temperatures in Cyprus reached record highs of 45.6c with 90% humidity. We're trying every trick in the book to keep cool. The houses we live in are not built for the Mediterranean climate and manage to be hotter than the outside temperature in summer, and colder in winter. We have two portable air-conditioning units, which bring the temperature in the living room down to about 30c, but upstairs we rely on ceiling fans.

Last night was possibly the worst nights sleep I have had yet. I woke up at midnight actually stuck to the sheet, tried showering (for the second time in two hours) in what should be our "cold" water, then tried sleeping in the living room floor, going outside, and eventually gave up and went back to our bedroom.

The worst of the heatwave is due to pass by Wednesday, and the heat of summer generally subsides from mid-August onwards. Fortunately we won't have to wait that long. We are making a well timed trip to the UK next week and the dogs will have a break in air-conditioned kennels... something I think they might actually enjoy.

  1. 45.6??? ouch! I could barely cope 2 weeks ago when it was a 'high' of 38! When its really uncomfortably hot my trick is to freeze large bottles of water, wrap in plastic and a teatowel and sleep clutching that, works for me everytime!
Hope you get some respite from it soon

  2. Well it's raining here-warm but not as warm as there! Hope it cools down for you.

  3. Now that's hot. Want to come back to Canada

  4. Oh August is excruciating! Our humidity has been down some the last few days, but with temps hovering around 103*F it's not wise to go outside any longer than it takes to walk down the driveway to the mailbox. We have very good air conditioning so I stay inside much of the time. There is no way to get a good nights sleep if one is hot. I hope you get some relief soon. Oh, and BTW, love those cute little bags you made!

  5. That does sound uncomfortable. During really hot nights in Italy I tend to get up and put my hands in cold water to cool down a bit then hold them to my face. Of course it's not a problem here in Scotland, August and we are still snuggling under our winter weight duvet. Hope you sleep better soon.

  6. Oh I can feel that stickiness. With the somewhat humid days here I just DRAG myself around and hope I fall asleep and wake up a month from now.Enjoy your trip and take advantage of AC.
